ARCHITECTURAL COMPETITION
The University of Cambridge is undertaking an ambitious new urban extension in North West Cambridge. The masterplan for the development, prepared by Aecom, has been submitted for outline planning approval and the University is now looking to appoint a number of complementary architectural and landscape firms to design and deliver each individual Lot.
The University has asked Colander to set up and manage a three-stage competition to identify architects and landscape designers for Phase 1.
Any changes to the competition process or programme will be communicated through this website, so competing practices are advised to check here regularly for any updates.
Please note that this website is the only valid source of information for this competition and therefore any information obtained from other sources and used as part of any submission will be disregarded by the University.

The Vision for North West Cambridge is to create a new district and extension to the City, centred around a mixed academic and urban community: a place that is sustainable, long lasting and ambitious offering a high quality of life to enhance both the City and the University. The intention is to provide for the future expansion and renewal of the University by creating research space and residential accommodation for staff and students, with an economic return to the University.
In terms of design quality, the University of Cambridge and its colleges have an unparalleled reputation as a professional client and patron of contemporary architecture. As principal developer of the North West Cambridge site, the University will lead and govern the process of procuring and realising the highest standards of design and construction; establishing the quality of architecture and public realm across the development.
Phase 1 comprises eight Lots, requiring six architectural practices (Lots 1 to 5 and 7) and two landscape design practices (Lots A and B). Most of the building types are residential but there is also a supermarket, other retail spaces and community facilities.
