Four thought provoking submissions from four bespoke teams - but there could only be one winner....
We are delighted to announce that the team led by Layer Studio, comprising Gagarin Studio; Greengage; PLACED; Curtins; BWA and Project Four has won this competition to sensitively develop the beautiful coastal Iron Line at Millom into a recreational attraction that unites ecology, heritage and culture.
The Jury Panel included representatives from the Millom Town Board, the RSPB and Copeland Borough Council, supported by independent technical expertise from Jolyon Brewis of Grimshaw; Kate Bailey, Trustee of the Landscape Institute and a member of the NW Design Review Panel; and Aldo Rinaldi the project's Art Curator.
In reaching their decision, the panel members reviewed the team's submissions, received comments from a Technical Panel and the local community and held in-depth interviews with each team.
The Jury Panel was unanimous in its decision to award the project to Layer Studio and its team.
As part of their submissions, the teams created two A1 boards that explored their approach to the project and a short piece to camera that captured the team's passion and enthusiasm for the challenges and opportunities offered by this remarkable site, while highlighting their approach to inclusion and co-creation.
Here are the boards and video created by the winning team, led by Layer Studio.
Three other teams submitted compliant bids and we are delighted to show you their boards and videos as well, starting with the contribution from the team led by Bauman Lyons Architects.
Below is the contribution from the team led by Collective Architecture.
And, last, but far from least, the contribution from the team led by Farrer Huxley.
Many thanks to all the shortlisted teams for their entries, and of course to the other teams that sent in submissions at Stage 1 of the competition. All the Stage 1 boards can be seen on our Journal entry announcing the shortlist.
Many congratulations to each and every person on the winning team. We really hope you enjoy working on this amazing project with this lovely client. We look forward to seeing the finished designs!
“We were incredibly impressed with the very high standard of submissions for this competition. The jury panel assessed the highly talented teams, all of whom had the ability and skills to take this project forward and do an excellent job. The quality of thinking and depth of expertise in all the teams was clear. This was a very close competition but ultimately the panel was unanimous in selecting Layer Studio as the winner. We now look forward to working with the team as they develop outline proposals specific to the Iron Line project.”
